The Wine

Château Brane-Cantenac — a distinguished Second Growth of Margaux, long associated with the Brane and Cantenac families and now under Bernard Magrez's stewardship — is one of the appellation's reference estates. Recent vintages have attracted strong praise for their balance and refinement. Planted chiefly to Cabernet Sauvignon with significant Merlot (and smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot), Brane-Cantenac produces wines noted for their floral perfume (violet and rose), concentrated red and black fruit, polished yet present tannins, and a delicate structural spine. The cellar combines modern winemaking with careful élevage in quality oak to yield elegant, ageworthy wines. I admire Brane-Cantenac for its graceful fusion of Margaux perfume, concentration, and refined structure.
