The Wine
Marqués de Murrieta is one of Rioja's great estates, founded in 1852, and Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial is its flagship wine. It is only made in exceptional vintages and spends a decade maturing before release. The 2010 is a blend of Tempranillo and Mazuelo from the single vineyard La Plana, planted in 1950 at 485 metres, the highest point of the Finca Ygay estate. The 2010 was named Wine Spectator's #1 Wine of the Year in 2020 and scored 99 points from James Suckling, who finds it at a beautiful stage of evolution, with aromas of dried flowers, bark, red berries and hints of tar and tea, ethereal fruit and finely etched, precise tannins. It was aged for 26 months in French and American oak and a further 13 months in concrete. 2010 is widely regarded as a classic vintage in Rioja, and just over 10,000 cases were produced. Wines from Rioja can age for 50 years or more. This 2010 is approachable now but will continue to evolve for decades. The wine is packed in cases of 6 bottles and the minimum order is 6 bottles. It is stored in-bond in England at London City Bond and can be re-sold for you by Fine Vintage or shipped to you worldwide by a specialist wine transporter at your cost.
